RECYFIX TRAFFIC GUGIBLOC drains Alfredo V Bonfil underpass in Cancún, Mexico

Cancún is the largest city in Quintana Roo, Mexico and is located on the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. It is the centre of the Riviera Maya tourist area and attracts more than 7 million tourists annually. Most of these travellers use the Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio, which connects the international airport of Cancún with Riviera Maya.

Underpass with obstacles
In order to better distribute the large traffic flow of tourists, residents and commuters and to reduce accidents, an underpass system was built at the "Alfredo V Bonfil" junction in Cancún in 2012. This underpass has a total length of 600 metres and a tunnel of 98.48 metres. Six lanes - three in each direction - guide traffic through the underpass.

During the construction of the underpass system, six runs with in situ drainage channels with mesh gratings were installed across the entire length of the roadway. However, it was quickly established that the systems could not meet the requirements of this highly frequented road. Due to their dimensions and the enormous daily loads caused by the large number of vehicles driving over them, the channels were very often damaged and deformed. In addition, protruding parts often caused damage to vehicle tyres. As a result, the drainage systems had to be repaired at least every 6 months and completely replaced every 2 years, which meant regular partial closures of the road.

How GUGIBLOC channels direct traffic into safe lanes
Cancún City Council decided to install a new drainage system that could cope with the daily traffic load. The choice fell on the RECYFIX TRAFFIC GUGIBLOC system from HAURATON. The monolithic system is ideal for the heavily trafficked road in Cancún.

The robust channel has a polypropylene channel body and a "Ω"-shaped ductile iron grating in load class E 600 firmly connected to it. The contact surfaces of the gratings on the channels are well below the final surface and are thus protected from mechanical loads from vehicles and environmental influences. Due to the shape of the gratings, the monolithic construction with the connection of the recycled composite body and the ductile iron grating, the channel system offers a high retention volume combined with exceptional high traffic load resistance. This allows even large quantities of water to be drained off safely. Due to its high-quality RECYFIX material, the drainage system is also highly resistant to corrosion, frost, de-icing salts and UV light.

A total of 130 metres of RECYFIX TRAFFIC GUGIBLOC 300 were installed in the Alfredo V Bonfil underpass. "The system has produced a very satisfactory result," says Roger Espinosa Rodríguez, Secretary of Public Works and Services, with satisfaction.
