Retention is a term used in water management and refers to the retention of water. By combining a retention volume with flow control, drainage channels can provide intermediate storage for the water occurring during heavy rain events, and thereafter discharge the water in a slower and continuous manner. This provides relief to the canal system and waterways, and helps to prevent flooding.
