Filtration is a mechanical process of separation based on physical principles. A medium, most often a suspension, flows through a filter whereby the particles are removed from the liquid - depending on the size of the pores and the respective filter resistance. A differentiation is made between surface filtration and deep bed filtration. As in sedimentation (see sedimentation systems), pure filtration can only remove undissolved particles from the medium.
