exposure class

In order to be sufficiently durable, concrete components have to be sufficiently resistant to chemical and physical impact in their environment and in the materials handled. The impact from the different environmental conditions - which are not entered as loads into the structural design of the system - is sub-divided into exposure classes that impact on the concrete, the reinforcement steel or any other metal components. This determines the requirements for the composition of the concrete to be used as well as for the concrete cover and permissible width of cracks.

Definition of types of exposure:
XO - no corrosion or exposure risk
XC 1-4 - corrosion of reinforcements caused by carbonation
XD 1-3 - corrosion of reinforcements caused by chloride, except seawater
XS 1-3 - corrosion of reinforcements caused by chloride from seawater
XF 1-4 - exposure to frost with and without de-icing material
XA 1-3 - concrete corrosion owing to exposure to chemicals
XM 1-3 - concrete corrosion owing to exposure to wear
